Custom App Development
Custom Apps Built Around How Your Business Actually Works
AuthorsAxis designs and builds bespoke web applications — internal tools, SaaS platforms, customer portals, dashboards, and APIs that replace spreadsheets, disconnected software, and manual workflows. Off-the-shelf tools force your business into someone else's shape. Custom apps fit yours. We scope honestly, build maintainably, hand over everything, and never lock you into code you cannot take with you.

Custom Apps We Design, Build & Support
A curated look at the types of custom applications we take on — SaaS platforms, admin dashboards, customer portals, internal tools, marketplace apps, and booking systems. Each project below is a concept demonstration of our approach, unless explicitly marked as a client project with verified details.
Every custom app on this page started as a spreadsheet, a repeated process, or a tool that almost fit — but did not.
Discuss Your ProjectThe Full Journey
From First Brief to a Live, Maintainable Custom Application
A finished custom app is not just a screen design or a database schema. It is a defined product, a designed interface, a tested backend, a hardened deployment, documentation, and a plan for what happens when requirements change — because they always do. A good build is easy to extend, easy to hand over, and honest about what it will cost to run.
Some clients arrive with a clear brief. Some arrive with a legacy system that has been outgrown. Some arrive with a working prototype and a desire to make it production-grade. Wherever you are, we map the path forward and are clear about what each phase involves before any work begins.
You can join the process at any stage. The roadmap, the deliverables, and the release schedule are always agreed with you in writing before work begins.
What Our Custom App Services Include
Product Strategy, Design, Full-Stack Build & Integration
Every engagement is scoped individually. Most custom app projects combine several of the eight services below — from product strategy through to ongoing support and iteration.
Product Strategy & Discovery
Before any code, we define the product: the users, the core workflows, the must-have features for v1, and what can wait. The output is a scoped feature list, a data model sketch, and a realistic roadmap — not a wishlist that balloons the budget.
Discuss this service →UX & App Design
User flows, wireframes, and pixel-level interface design for web apps — tables that scale to thousands of rows, forms that respect the user's time, empty states that help, and components that hand off cleanly to development.
Discuss this service →Front-End Development
Modern front-end builds in React, Next.js, Vue, or Svelte — typed, component-driven, accessible, and fast. Responsive from the start, tested against real usage, and structured so another developer can pick up the codebase without a rewrite.
Discuss this service →Back-End Development
Server-side logic in Node, Python, Go, or whatever fits the problem. Databases (Postgres, MySQL, MongoDB), job queues, background processing, file storage, and everything else the app needs behind the interface.
Discuss this service →API Design & Integration
Custom REST or GraphQL APIs with proper auth, versioning, rate limiting, and documentation. Plus integration with the third-party services your business already depends on — payments, CRM, email, storage, analytics.
Discuss this service →Authentication & Permissions
Secure login, SSO where needed, and role-based access control done properly — sessions, tokens, password resets, and audit trails. Permissions are designed into the app from day one, not bolted on after a security review.
Discuss this service →Deployment, Hosting & DevOps
Hosting on your cloud account (AWS, GCP, Vercel, or similar), CI/CD pipelines, environment configuration, backups, and monitoring. We set up the deployment so it is repeatable and documented, not a fragile manual process.
Discuss this service →Ongoing Support & Iteration
Dependency upgrades, security patches, monitoring, bug fixes, and small feature iterations on rolling support plans. Or we hand the fully documented codebase to your team with no ongoing plan at all — the choice is yours.
Discuss this service →Each service can be engaged on its own or as part of a full custom app project. Scope, deliverables, and revision limits are always confirmed in writing before work begins.
What We Build
The Kinds of Custom Apps We Deliver
We work across a wide range of custom app types, but every project is assessed individually. Not every idea needs a custom build — sometimes a well-configured SaaS tool or a lightweight script is the smarter answer, and we will tell you if so.
SaaS Platforms
Multi-tenant products with user accounts, subscription billing, and self-serve onboarding — built to scale from pilot to production.
Admin Dashboards
Operations consoles that replace fragile spreadsheets and scattered tools — with role-based access, search, and reporting.
Customer Portals
Logged-in areas where customers view invoices, submit requests, download documents, and track status — replacing routine support email.
Internal Tools
Purpose-built apps that fix a specific operational problem — inventory, scheduling, approvals, or anything else the team is doing by hand.
Marketplace Platforms
Two-sided marketplaces with listings, search, messaging, reviews, and split payments — plus moderation tools for the operations team.
Booking & Scheduling Systems
Custom booking flows with availability rules, reminders, calendar sync, and cancellation handling — built around how you actually work.
Custom API Services
Bespoke APIs that unify data from multiple systems into one consistent interface — with auth, rate limiting, and OpenAPI documentation.
Data & Reporting Apps
Custom reporting interfaces that pull from multiple sources into one clean view — refreshed automatically, no copy-paste, no stale numbers.
Our Custom App Process
How We Scope, Design, Build, Launch & Support
Six clear stages. Each stage has an agreed deliverable, and each one begins only after the previous stage has been reviewed and approved by you.
Discovery & Product Brief
We start by understanding the problem — the workflow you want to replace, the audience the app serves, and the outcome you actually need. Features are ranked ruthlessly. Data entities are sketched. Nothing is quoted until this stage is done.
You receive: a written scope document and feature roadmapUX & System Architecture
Every screen is wireframed in low fidelity and every workflow is mapped end to end — user flows, navigation logic, and edge cases. In parallel, we sketch the data model and system architecture so the build has a solid foundation, not a stack of guesses.
You receive: approved wireframes and a technical architecture summaryVisual Design
Typography, colour, components, and interaction states are developed into a design system that fits your brand and the product. You see key screens at high fidelity — including empty states, error states, loading behaviour, and edge cases — not just the happy path.
You receive: high-fidelity screen designs and a component libraryBuild & Testing
Development happens in sprints with regular builds you can actually use and test. Back-end, front-end, and integrations are all written to a consistent standard — typed, tested, and documented. Internal QA happens before anything reaches you.
You receive: testable builds at agreed intervals and an integration test suiteLaunch, Monitor & Handover
We deploy to your cloud account, configure monitoring and backups, and hand over everything — source code, infrastructure access, and written documentation. Automations and alerts are put in place so you know when something is wrong before your users do.
You receive: a live app, documentation, and full account ownershipSupport & Iteration
Dependency upgrades, security patches, and small feature iterations are handled on optional rolling support plans. New features are quoted individually, so you can grow the app without re-negotiating the entire engagement. Or we hand it fully to your team.
You receive: documentation, training, and optional ongoing supportWe do not quote timelines before we understand the scope of a project. Custom app timelines depend heavily on feature complexity, integrations, and any legacy data migration. Any agency that quotes a fixed price and fixed date before Discovery is guessing.
Why Authors Choose AuthorsAxis
Why Clients Trust Us With Their Custom App Builds
These are the working principles we hold ourselves to on every custom app engagement.
Honest scoping — even when it costs us the project
If your idea would be better served by an off-the-shelf tool, a spreadsheet fix, or a $500 automation instead of a $50,000 custom build, we will tell you. We would rather lose the sale than build something you do not need.
Fixed scope, transparent change requests
You will always know what features are included, what integrations are in scope, and what is not. Change requests are handled openly, with additional work quoted transparently — never absorbed silently and invoiced as a surprise.
You own the code, infrastructure, and IP
Source code repositories, cloud accounts, domain names, and all intellectual property transfer to you on final payment. There is no proprietary platform, no hosting lock-in, and no code held hostage. If you leave, everything goes with you.
Maintainable builds, not throwaway code
We write code that another developer can pick up and extend. We avoid unnecessary dependencies, keep architecture simple, use standard patterns, and document the important decisions. If you ever change developers, nothing needs to be rewritten.
Security and permissions designed in, not bolted on
Authentication, authorisation, and data isolation are designed into the app from the first sprint, not tacked on after a security review. For apps that handle personal or financial data, this matters more than almost anything else.
Support after launch, not radio silence
Dependencies age, frameworks move, and requirements change. We offer rolling support plans that keep the app secure and current — or we hand everything over fully documented to your in-house team with no ongoing commitment.
We do not claim years of experience, award counts, or client numbers on this page. Those belong in a conversation, not a headline — and you are welcome to ask about them directly.
Featured Case Studies
Selected Custom App Case Studies
Detailed case studies are added as engagements are completed and approved for publication by the client. The template below shows how each project is documented — including the starting point, our approach, deliverables, and verified outcomes.
[Project / Client Name]
[Describe the client's original situation — what process or legacy system needed to change, what was being done manually, and what was not working.]
[Describe the strategy, the platform and stack decisions, and the work we did — including feature scoping, design direction, integrations, and testing.]
[List the actual deliverables — application code, source repository, documentation, integrations, training.]
[Placeholder — replace with a verified outcome. Do not invent user numbers, revenue figures, or time-savings claims.]

Project Pricing
How Custom App Engagements Are Priced
Two custom app projects are almost never the same, and we do not pretend otherwise. What a project costs depends on the feature set, the design complexity, the integrations, whether the backend is simple or complex, and whether any legacy data needs to be migrated. Every custom app is priced on scope, not on a generic per-screen or per-hour rate.
Rather than publishing a starting price that means nothing in practice, we quote every engagement individually after Discovery. You will always know what features are included, what integrations are in scope, and what the next phase will cost before you commit to it. If you are comparing quotes from other agencies, we are happy to help you compare like-for-like scopes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Custom Apps — Common Questions
What is a "custom app," exactly?
A custom app is a piece of software built specifically for your business, rather than configured from an off-the-shelf product. It could be a web application, an internal dashboard, a customer portal, a SaaS platform, a marketplace, a booking system, or an API. The defining feature is that it is shaped around your processes and data — not around what a vendor decided to support.
Do I actually need a custom app, or would an off-the-shelf tool work?
Honestly, many businesses that ask for a custom app do not need one. If a standard SaaS tool already fits 90% of what you need, buying and configuring it is usually the smarter path. A custom app makes sense when no existing tool fits your workflow, when your process is a competitive advantage, when you need to integrate systems that do not otherwise talk, or when you have simply outgrown the tool you started with. We will tell you honestly which case you are in.
How long does it take to build a custom app?
It depends entirely on scope. A focused internal tool with a handful of screens can take a few weeks. A full SaaS platform with user accounts, subscriptions, integrations, and reporting typically takes several months. We do not quote timelines before Discovery because the honest answer depends on the feature set — and fixed numbers given in advance are almost always wrong.
How much does a custom app cost to build?
Cost varies enormously with scope — from a simple internal tool to a complex multi-tenant platform with integrations and admin tooling. Rather than publishing a misleading starting price, we quote every project individually after Discovery. You will always know what features are included, what integrations are in scope, and what the total is before you commit to anything.
Who owns the code and the infrastructure?
You do — completely. Source code repositories, cloud infrastructure accounts, domain names, third-party service subscriptions, and all intellectual property transfer to you on final payment. Accounts are registered in your name from the start, not transferred from ours. There is no lock-in, and you can take the code to any other developer at any time.
Which tech stack do you use?
We are stack-agnostic — we choose based on the problem. For most web apps we build with React or Next.js on the front end, Node or Python on the back end, and Postgres or MongoDB for data. For simpler tools we may use lighter stacks. We avoid proprietary frameworks and exotic dependencies because they make handover harder and lock you in. If you have an existing stack you want us to work within, we will.
What happens after the app is launched?
Custom apps need ongoing maintenance — dependencies update, frameworks change, and security patches are released. We offer rolling support plans that cover updates, bug fixes, and small iterations. Alternatively, we hand over a fully documented codebase and infrastructure to your in-house team or another developer with no ongoing commitment.
Can you take over an existing app someone else built?
Yes, in many cases. We will review the existing codebase and give you an honest assessment — some codebases can be extended; others are more efficient to rebuild. We will tell you which path we recommend and why before you commit to anything. There is no point extending a codebase that will fight you at every step.
How do you handle data migration from an old system?
Data migration is a project in its own right, and we scope it separately. We map the source data, design the destination schema, build and test the migration scripts, and run them in a staging environment before touching production. If any data is ambiguous or requires business decisions, we flag it early rather than guessing. Migrations done badly can break an app faster than anything else.
Is the app secure enough for customer data?
Security is designed in from the first sprint, not bolted on at the end. That means proper authentication, role-based access control, encrypted data at rest and in transit, secure secrets handling, and audit logs where relevant. For apps handling personal, financial, or health data, additional compliance work may be required — we will scope that honestly during Discovery.
Do you build both the app and the backend it needs?
Yes. Most of our custom app engagements include both the front end and the back end — user authentication, databases, APIs, admin dashboards, and integrations with the tools you already use. If you already have a backend, we integrate with it; if you do not, we build one. Either way, everything is yours on delivery.
Can you integrate with the tools we already use?
Yes. We regularly integrate with payment processors (Stripe, Square, PayPal), CRM systems (HubSpot, Salesforce, Pipedrive), email and messaging platforms (SendGrid, Twilio, Slack), calendar tools, storage providers, and analytics services. If a tool exposes an API or webhook, we can usually connect to it. If it does not, we will tell you early.
Do you require long-term contracts?
No. Custom app projects are fixed-scope engagements — you pay for the build, and you own everything on delivery. Support and iteration afterwards are optional rolling monthly plans or fixed-scope work. There is no mandatory twelve-month retainer and no exit clause you have to negotiate.
How do we get started?
Fill in the inquiry form below with a short description of your project — what you are trying to build, who it is for, and what problem it solves. We will reply with an initial assessment and, if it looks like a good fit, schedule a Discovery call. Nothing is quoted until we understand the scope, and there is no obligation to proceed after that conversation.
