Web Design & Development for Authors, Publishers & Creative Businesses

AuthorsAxis designs and builds fast, elegant, conversion-focused websites — from author homepages and personal brand sites to business platforms, online bookstores, and course portals. Every project starts with strategy, moves through custom design, is developed on a platform you can actually manage, and launches with the technical foundations that matter: speed, SEO, mobile responsiveness, accessibility, and analytics.

Selected Web Projects

Custom Websites Built for Authors, Businesses & Creators

A curated look at website concepts across author homepages, business platforms, editorial blogs, online bookstores, course portals, and portfolio sites. Each project below is a concept design produced to demonstrate our range in web design and development, unless explicitly marked as a client project.

Concept
Author Website

A literary author homepage built around a single featured book, a quiet newsletter opt-in, and an events section — designed to convert readers into subscribers and readers-of-the-next-book.

UX · Custom design · WordPress build · Newsletter integration · SEO

Concept
Business & Consulting Site

A structured services website for a solo consultant, built to move a visitor from overview to case study to booked call in three scrolls — with lead qualification baked into the contact flow.

Strategy · Custom design · WordPress build · CRM integration

Concept
Editorial Blog & Publication

A long-form editorial layout built for daily publishing — with reading experience as the priority, category navigation that scales, and a subscription flow that does not feel like a pop-up.

Information architecture · Design system · CMS setup · SEO

Concept
Online Bookstore / E-commerce

A direct-to-reader bookstore selling signed editions, bundles, and digital downloads — with secure checkout, tax handling, and a lightweight account system for repeat buyers.

E-commerce setup · Payment integration · Product design · Fulfilment flows

Concept
Course & Membership Platform

A gated course platform with lessons, progress tracking, member profiles, and a Stripe subscription flow — built to scale from a single cohort to a full catalogue of courses.

Platform strategy · Custom design · Membership build · Payments

Concept
Portfolio & Agency Site

A visually-led portfolio for a small studio, with a filterable project archive, case study templates, and a client intake form connected to a lightweight CRM.

Design system · Custom build · CMS · Intake flow

Every website on this page began as a rough sketch, a napkin idea, or a stalled project.

The Full Journey

From First Sketch to a Live, Fast, Maintainable Website

A finished website is not just a pretty homepage. It is a clear information architecture, a designed visual system, written and structured content, a responsive build, an SEO foundation, analytics, and a plan for what happens after launch. Most clients arrive needing help with one or two of those stages — but each stage depends on the ones before it.

AuthorsAxis works at whichever stage you are actually at. Some clients arrive with a half-finished WordPress site that needs a proper rebuild. Some have a logo and nothing else. Some have a fully launched site that needs a redesign or a performance overhaul. Wherever you are, we map the path from there to a site you can be proud of — and we are clear about what each stage involves before any work begins.

01 Idea & goals
02 Structure & wireframes

You can join the process at any stage. The path forward, the deliverables, and the timeline are always agreed with you in writing before any work begins.

What Our Web Services Include

Web Strategy, UX, Design, Development & Support

Every web project is scoped individually. Most engagements combine several of the eight services below — from strategy and UX through custom development and post-launch support.

01

Website Strategy & Discovery

We start every web project by defining what the site actually needs to do. Who is it for, what should a visitor do first, what pages must exist, how will success be measured. This shapes every wireframe and design decision that follows.

02

UX Research & Wireframing

Low-fidelity wireframes map every page, section, and call to action before a single pixel of design is committed. This is where content structure, navigation logic, and conversion paths are worked out on paper — cheaply.

03

Custom Website Design

Custom visual design built around your brand — not a template. Typography, colour, imagery, layout, and micro-interactions are all chosen to fit your audience, your content, and your conversion goals. Every design is delivered as a responsive system, not a single flat comp.

04

WordPress & Webflow Development

Clean, maintainable builds on platforms you can actually manage. WordPress with a lightweight theme or Webflow for fully-designed marketing sites. No bloated page builders, no plugin sprawl, no code you cannot edit later.

05

E-commerce & Online Bookstore Setup

Direct-to-reader bookstores, product catalogues, and digital download shops. Secure checkout, tax handling, shipping logic, order notifications, and a buying experience that feels calm — not like a checkout maze.

06

SEO, Speed & Technical Optimization

On-page SEO, structured data, sitemaps, and clean semantic HTML — plus real performance work: image compression, lazy loading, caching, and Core Web Vitals tuning. A site that loads fast ranks better and feels better.

07

Integrations & Workflow Automation

Connect your site to the tools you already use — newsletter platforms, CRM, calendar booking, payment processors, analytics, and publishing pipelines. We wire up the automations so routine tasks stop being manual.

08

Ongoing Maintenance & Support

Updates, backups, security monitoring, uptime alerts, small content edits, and quarterly performance reviews. Optional ongoing plans so your site stays fast, safe, and current — without needing to think about it monthly.

Each service can be engaged on its own or as part of a full web project. Scope, deliverables, and revision limits are always confirmed in writing before work begins.

Our Web Design & Development Process

How We Design, Build & Launch a Website

Six clear stages. Each stage has an agreed deliverable, and each one begins only after the previous stage has been reviewed and approved by you.

01

Discovery & Strategy

We start with a structured conversation about your goals, your audience, your competitors, and what success actually looks like. We audit what exists (if anything), review content, and define the sitemap, page priorities, and conversion goals for the site.

You receive: a written site strategy and information architecture
02

Wireframes & Content Structure

Every page is sketched in low fidelity — layout, hierarchy, section order, and calls to action — before any visual design work begins. This is where content gaps become obvious, and where changes cost minutes instead of days.

You receive: approved wireframes for every key page template
03

Visual Design

Typography, colour, imagery, spacing, and component design are developed into a responsive visual system. You see desktop and mobile layouts side by side, with hover, focus, and empty states considered — not just the happy path.

You receive: full visual design for all approved page templates
04

Development & Build

The approved design is built on WordPress, Webflow, or a custom stack depending on your needs. Code is clean, documented, and testable. Content is loaded, integrations are connected, and every interactive element is verified across modern browsers.

You receive: a staging site ready for full review and testing
05

QA, SEO & Launch

Before launch we run through a full QA checklist — responsive behaviour, accessibility, form testing, broken links, metadata, and Core Web Vitals. We configure analytics, submit sitemaps, verify indexing, and then go live with a written rollback plan in place.

You receive: a live, indexed, fully QA'd website
06

Ongoing Support

Optional support plans cover updates, backups, security monitoring, uptime alerts, content edits, and quarterly performance reviews. Or we can hand the site over completely with documentation and training for your own team.

You receive: documentation, training, and optional ongoing support

We do not quote timelines before we understand the scope of a project. Every schedule is built around your content readiness, your review pace, the number of page templates involved, and the complexity of any integrations.

Why Authors Choose AuthorsAxis

Why Clients Trust Us With Their Website

These are the working principles we hold ourselves to on every web design and development engagement.

01

Strategy before pixels

We do not start with colour palettes. We start with what the site needs to accomplish, who it is for, and how success will be measured. Design follows strategy — not the other way around.

02

Clear scope and communication

You will always know what pages are included, what integrations are in scope, and what is not. Change requests are handled openly, with revisions and additional work quoted transparently.

03

Custom design, not template soup

We do not apply a purchased theme to every project. Every site is designed around your brand, your content, and your audience — even when we are building on WordPress or Webflow.

04

Performance and accessibility as defaults

Speed, mobile behaviour, and WCAG accessibility are treated as core requirements, not optional upgrades. Every site we ship is tested against real performance benchmarks before launch.

05

You own everything

Domain, hosting, code, content, design files, analytics — all registered in your name and handed over. There is no lock-in. You can take the site and run it with any developer at any time.

06

Support after launch, not silence

A website is not a one-time deliverable. We offer optional ongoing support for updates, backups, small edits, and performance reviews — or we hand the site to your team fully documented.

We do not claim years of experience, award counts, or client numbers on this page. Those belong in a conversation, not a headline — and you are welcome to ask about them directly.

Project Pricing

How Web Design & Development Projects Are Priced

Two websites are almost never the same, and we do not pretend otherwise. What a web project costs depends on the number of page templates, the complexity of the design, the platform and integrations required, whether content needs to be written or migrated, and how much ongoing support you want.

Rather than publishing a single starting price that means nothing in practice, we quote every web project individually after the Discovery stage. You will always know what is included, what is not, and what the next stage will cost before you commit to it. If you are comparing web design quotes elsewhere, we are happy to help you compare like-for-like scopes.

Page count & templates A five-page brochure site and a fifty-page editorial site with custom templates are very different projects. Pricing reflects the actual number of unique layouts required.
Design complexity Custom illustration, motion design, and bespoke interactive elements are scoped separately from standard layout and typography work.
Platform & integrations A Webflow marketing site costs differently from a WordPress membership platform or a custom-built web app. Each integration — payments, CRM, courses, calendars — is scoped individually.
Content & migration If content needs to be written, edited, or migrated from an existing site, that work is quoted transparently and separately from design and development.

Frequently Asked Questions

Web Design & Development — Common Questions

What does your web design service include?

Our web design and development service typically covers strategy, information architecture, wireframing, custom visual design, responsive development on WordPress, Webflow, or a custom stack, SEO setup, integrations, QA, and launch. Ongoing maintenance and support are available as an optional add-on. Everything is scoped individually and confirmed in writing before work begins.

Do you build on WordPress, Webflow, or something else?

We build on WordPress when you need a flexible content-managed site that you or your team can edit long-term. We build on Webflow for design-led marketing sites that don't need heavy CMS logic. For specialist needs — membership platforms, custom tools, bespoke integrations — we build on a custom stack. We recommend the right platform after Discovery, based on your actual needs, not ours.

Can you redesign my existing website?

Yes. Many of our engagements are redesigns of existing sites that have become outdated, slow, difficult to edit, or misaligned with the brand. We audit what exists, identify what is worth keeping, and rebuild around the current goals — rather than starting from zero unless that is genuinely the right call.

Will I be able to edit my own website after launch?

Yes — that is a design requirement, not a bonus. Every site we build comes with a content management system you can actually use for routine edits: changing text, adding blog posts, updating products, swapping images, and so on. We include documentation and a walkthrough so your team is not dependent on us for basic changes.

Do you write the content for the website, or do I need to supply it?

Both options are available. Some clients supply finished copy and imagery; we place it and design around it. Others ask us to write or edit the site copy and source or create imagery. Content work is quoted separately so you only pay for what you actually need. We will flag any content gaps during Discovery.

How long does a website project take?

It depends on the number of page templates, the design complexity, the platform, and how quickly content and feedback come back from your side. A focused landing page can be days. A full multi-page site with custom design and integrations typically takes several weeks. We do not quote timelines before Discovery, because doing so without understanding scope would be guesswork.

Is hosting included?

Hosting is registered in your name and paid directly by you — we do not host on our own accounts. We recommend appropriate hosting for your stack and traffic level, help configure it, and migrate the finished site to it. This means there is no lock-in, and if you ever change developer, you take everything with you.

Do you handle domains and email?

Yes. We can help register or transfer your domain, configure DNS, and set up professional email on your domain (Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, or a similar provider). All accounts are created in your name, with you as the owner.

Will my site be mobile-friendly and fast?

Both are baseline requirements, not upgrades. Every site is designed mobile-first, tested across modern devices, and built for Core Web Vitals — image compression, lazy loading, caching, minimal JavaScript, and clean semantic HTML. We run performance tests before launch and share the results.

Do you do SEO?

We handle on-page SEO and technical SEO: semantic HTML, metadata, structured data, sitemaps, canonical tags, Open Graph, and search-engine-friendly URLs. We also configure analytics and search console. Ongoing content-based SEO (keyword research, content strategy, link building) is available as a separate service and quoted independently.

Can you integrate my site with the tools I already use?

Yes. We regularly integrate newsletter platforms (Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Substack), CRM systems (HubSpot, Pipedrive), calendar booking (Calendly, Cal.com), payment processors (Stripe, PayPal, Square), e-commerce backends, and analytics. If you use something more niche, tell us during Discovery and we will confirm feasibility before quoting.

Do you offer ongoing maintenance after launch?

Yes. Optional support plans cover CMS and plugin updates, daily backups, security monitoring, uptime alerts, small content edits, and quarterly performance reviews. Or we can hand over a fully documented site to your own team with no ongoing plan — the choice is entirely yours.

Who owns the website, code, and design files?

You do — completely. Domain, hosting account, code repository, CMS install, design source files, and content are all registered in your name or handed over on final payment. There is no proprietary platform and no lock-in. You can take everything and work with any developer at any time.

Can you build a bookstore or sell digital downloads on my site?

Yes. We build direct-to-reader bookstores selling signed physical copies, bundles, and digital downloads (ePub, PDF, audiobooks). This includes product pages, cart and checkout, tax handling for relevant regions, shipping options for physical orders, order notifications, and integration with print-on-demand or fulfilment providers if required.
